The original writing is "Bas-Br茅au" (close to Paris). In this case, you should pronounce it like "bah-bray-OW".





The accent has probably disappeared due to an English keyboard.
Reply:The OW I wrote was the one in "tow" (if you're a US citizen, may the o: of four would be closer if you're from UK). It is the closed "o" sound in french, obtained by rounding and pursing the lips.

Reply:I've checked on the painting, as there are two versions of the name, one with and the other without an accent, and I wanted to make sure that we were talking about the right place.

- Bas-Br茅au -%26gt; bah-bray-OW (without insisting on the "y" and "w" parts, we don't do "glides" in French)


- Bas-Breau -%26gt; bah-brOW (idem)





with French writing convention, it would be : babr茅-O and babrO.





Edit: I looked up in a detailed map of France roads and towns, and there wasn't any "Bas-Breau". I found though "Br茅au" et "Grand-Br茅au".
